We Did It! Foodwishes Wins the Next Food Network Star YouTube Challenge!

You may have already heard by now, but I was the grand prize winner in the Next Food Network Star YouTube Challenge! Thanks to you, as well as my large, unbelievably passionate, and supportive subscriber base on YouTube, we dominated the competition.

The voting was closed, so there was no way to monitor the number of votes cast, but gauging by the comments on the Food Networks YouTube channel, we crushed it. The response was nothing short of awe-inspiring! It seems one thing is very clear, despite my reservations; most of my fan would love to see me get some kind of show on the Food Network.

By the way, contrary to popular belief, thats not the prize. The grand prize is a trip for two to New York, dinner at one of the Food Networks chefs restaurants, and an interview with the network executives (although I should warn them – Im money in an interview). In that meeting I will pitch the idea for a Food Wishes style show, where the foods the star, and the chef is rarely, if ever, seen.

Thanks to all of you who voted! Stay tuned for more information as the adventure has only just begun!

Heading to Atlanta for the 1st Annual Atlanta Food Wine Festival!

Photo (c) Flickr User jbudlo2
Ill be grabbing a red-eye tonight out of San Francisco for my maiden voyage to Atlanta for the 1st Annual Atlanta Food & Wine Festival. Ill be in Atlanta until Monday covering this event, which is being billed as a celebration of authentic Southern cuisine, wine and spirits.

You know Im a sucker for a good food and wine festival, especially one with chefs like Chris Lilly, John Besh, and Tim Love involved. The organizers are patterning the event after the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen, which is the benchmark for these types of gatherings.

Heres what event organizer, Dominique Love had to say, "Were planning an experience like no other that will unite leaders of their craft - barbecue pit masters, award-winning chefs and mixologists, Master Sommeliers, fry cooks and local growers - to provide Festival guests the opportunity to sip, savor and learn about the best of Southern food and beverage traditions." Sounds good to me.

I do have a new, recently filmed breakfast video almost ready, so stay tuned for that, and as usual, I welcome you to follow along with all the fun on my Foodwishes Twitter account. Enjoy!

Slow Food Nations Food for Thought Panel Discussion

Thanks to FORA.tv and Slow Food Nation, the panel discussion I attended during the SFN08 event has been made available online. This panel is a whos who of the slow food movement, and I found the discussion to be fascinating on several levels.

The passion of the speakers is undeniable, their dedication to the mission is unquestioned, but beneath it all is a nagging frustration at not being able to fully answer the skeptics charges about how this "good, clean, and fair" food revolution will really take hold.

I left the lecture with almost as many questions as answers, but I also left with a smile, wondering how long it would be before food changes us, instead of the other way around.

This was a long discussion, so FORA.tv broke the video into two parts. This is part one. Enjoy!

Food Wishes The Highest Ranked Blog in the World!!

That’s right, and the screen shot I took of the Technorati blog ranking stats proves it! Part of my usual weekend site admin duties is going over to Technorati to check my blog’s rank. You can imagine my excitement when I realized I was now the author of the top ranked blog in the world. Well, that didn’t take long. I guess I better call my broker and begin discussing my IPO.

The blog has been climbing steadily in rank ever since I first began tracking these statistics a few months ago. Back then, Food Wishes was ranked like 120,000th. At first, I was kind of depressed that after all the hard work I hadn’t even cracked the top hundred thousand blogs. But when I saw that the total number of tracked blogs was an amazing 71 million I felt a lot better, since that put me well within the top 1%. Last week when I checked I had climbed to the 70,000th ranked blog. So, I figured at that rate of ascent it was only a matter of time before I took over the top spot. I just didn’t think I would pass 70,000 blogs in one week.

Well, much to my chagrin, I soon found out that Technorati was doing some type of site maintenance and that every blog in the world was given the top ranking for a few minutes. When they finished their work I saw my real rank; a respectable and still rapidly climbing 60,930. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

And the Winner for Best Home Chef in a Series is… Food Wishes! smattering of polite applause

We did it! Im proud to announce that Ive returned from Hollywood, Tasty Awards trophy in hand! It was a very long, short two-day trip, so Im going to keep this brief. I cant thank you all enough for taking the time to vote.

Every single time Ive asked for support with a contest or award, you faithful foodwishers come through like champs. Its one of the oldest clichés in the business, but its so true, without the audience, there is no show.

I met some amazing new people, and got to visit some dear old friends. Speaking of friends, I have to give a big shout out to my buddy Sara (aka Average Betty), who won the 2010 Home Chef award, and was nominated in more categories this year than any other show. Unfortunately, she was robbed, but it was an impressive showing nonetheless.

Los Angeles was a lot of fun, but Im excited to be back and cooking in chilly, not-quite-as-glamorous San Francisco. Thanks again, and stay tuned for a bunch of new videos airing soon!

In Defense of Food An Eaters Manifesto – A Lecture by Michael Pollan

This lecture by author, and Berkeley professor, Michael Pollan, is the longest video Ive ever posted on Foodwishes. I was scanning the usual sites for some funny weekend filler content, and I came across this. The best book, by far, I read last year was called The Omnivores Dilemma. It was a fascinating, scary, provocative, disturbing read, and for the first time I really started to think about all the "factory food" we consume.

This lecture filmed at Google, focuses mostly on Michaels new book, In Defense of Food. I highly recommend that if youre interested in what he is talking about, you buy these books and read about where our food comes from, and how it gets to us. I like to think Im doing some good in the world, showing people how easy it is to cook fresh food at home, but thats only part of it. What theyre buying and cooking is just as important. Enjoy.

So You Can Use Real Food to Lose Weight Without Dieting – I Knew It!

I’ll probably never write a book on healthy eating (I know, you’re shocked), but if I did, I’d like to think it would be similar to “Foodist,” the new book by my friend, and favorite neuroscientist, Darya Pino Rose. I’ve never been able to articulate it as well as Ms. Summer Tomato, but have always believed that delicious food is the solution, not the problem; and that relying solely on willpower to change behavior never works, for anything.

Genetically predisposed appearances to the contrary, I live a relatively healthy lifestyle (or “healthstyle” as it’s referred to in the book). I’m quite active, eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and generally stay away from processed foods. At this advanced age, I know what makes my body and mind feel good, and I try to eat as many of those foods as possible.

Of course, I’ve based most of my personal eating theories on intuition and anecdotal evidence, so it was nice having someone who actually understands all this stuff explain the science behind it. Besides learning why all those diets you tried didn’t work (spoiler alert: it wasn’t your fault), the smartly organized book is chock full of great tips and techniques, presented in an entertaining, often irreverent style.

I really did enjoy the book, and despite my complete lack of objectivity, I would enthusiastically recommend it to others. For more information, you can follow this link to Amazon, where the book is getting rave reviews (by people who actually paid for it).  Enjoy!

Establish a connection to the family about food and drink

My sisters and I started a cooking club; It is one of the worst organized clubs, which Ive ever heard. We not meet regularly, and we often bail out at the last minute. But it is still our cooking club and we have lots of fun.

The concept behind the Club is to prepare meals and we have never tasted recipe s or acquire before gemacht.Wir recipe s from magazines, cookbooks, friends or some of our favorite food shows.

So if an episode of down home had watched one of my sisters with the Neely is.One of the featured dishes was "yo get man chicken".Meine sister told, how did the Neely this dish chicken raved. With all the groaning and moaning, in Los was the Neely of kitchen that you thought it would be this Court value fabulous and definitely a try.

Now with this particular sister like you first a bit of research to do.So declared on the Food Network Web site and began their Suche.Innerhalb minutes see the Neely found page and the recipe for the "get yo man chicken".

Simone-s may go through the recipe and read the reviews from other viewers that prepared the food have gegeben.Die reviews were stellar, as "yo get man chicken" wanted to be presented at our next meal.

We decided on a Saturday evening this savoir faire to try to tell me sorry erfüllen.Tut a total miss the Neelys "yo man chicken get" was.

Listen to a few answers from this evening:

"Are you sure that followed the recipe?"
"Yes."
"Did you leave out all ingredients?"
"No."

My Youngest Fans Food Wish

A viewer named Louella emailed these photos of her darling son Nico, composing a letter asking for a food wish. I know there are a lot of Moms that visit the blog, so I thought Id post them so you can go, "awwwww." Thanks Louella, Ill see what I can do!
